| UnderTheGrid Open Source Development Plan |
| Posted by wsjordan(Admin) on August 21, 2007 4:51 PM |
Hey all! In an effort to coordinate the development of the UnderTheGrid system, I'm starting this thread to give (and get) suggestions on what the UtG project needs. At this point we have:
-User Account Management
-Event Management
-Event Discussions
-Calendar (Searching, etc.)
-RSS Inputs and Outputs (Used to link UnderTheGrid sites together)
-Email Notifications
-Internal Messaging
-Forums
The things we would like:
- UI Improvements – Jeez, pick a place to start. The calendar system? Account management? Event management? It could all be cleaned up and made easier to use. UI is not my specialty so I don't really have any suggestions.
- Better Cross-Network Event Controls – What we have right now is pretty rudimentary. It sure would be nice if we could track events a little more closely across sites. Maybe see where all an event is listed? Better controls over changes to events?
- MySpace-style Plugins – This should be a fairly easy one. I'd like to have something that can be plugged into other websites, such as MySpace, that would list X number of events of the user's preferred category/location. Maybe a Flash applet?
- PHP Port – Seeing as there are only like 5 people in the world that speak TCL, it might be nice to have a PHP (or other popular language) port of the UtG system. At a bare minimum, it should have account and event management, and RSS input/output. The first generation wouldn't need some of the fancier things that the TCL version has, like edit roll-backs, internal messaging, etc.
I think that this would be such a useful thing to have, in fact, that I would be willing to pay for it. If you want to tackle this project, let me know and we can figure out what it would be worth. I'm not rolling in spare cash, so it wouldn't be a fortune, but just something for your trouble.
- Plug-ins for Popular Content Management Systems – Calendar systems in things like systems OpenACS, PHPNuke, PostNuke, etc. could be linked to the UnderTheGrid network. And for systems that don't already have built-in calendars, new UtG-powered calendars might be a nice thing.
Any other suggestions?
As people suggest new features, I'll add them to this post and if anything on this list gets built, I'll pull it off the list.
