An author and performer of over 150 unique compositions, Barbara lived and worked in the times of such personalities as Jacques Brel, Georges Brassens, and Edith Piaf. Born 1934 in Paris as Monique Andree Serf she grows up in the circle of her family: her father, Jacques, of Jewish Alsatian origin, her mother, Esther, her Russian grandmother, and her brother Jean. She is only five years old when the Second World War breaks out. Her childhood and youth is marked by constant escape and hiding from the Nazi occupation and the Vichy Government. This period had a predominant influence on her future life and work. Barbara became one of the most celebrated French Chanson singers of the 20th century, beloved by all generations for her sensibility, wit, and social conscience, as well as for her unique musical style. Yaga Kowaliks performance was prepared specially for the occasion of the 10th anniversary of Barbaras death in 2007. Entitled Barbara Story of a Life, it is a celebration of the singers unique oeuvre and shows particular stages of her biography through her songs: her childhood, love, war, and farewells. Yaga Kowalik has so far been the only interpreter of Barbaras songs in Poland, and all songs are sung by the artist in French. The beginning of the artists fascination with Barbaras music was the invitation to record one of Barbaras most beautiful hits, Black Eagle. Yaga Kowalik was invited by Gilles Pellegrini, ex-manager of Johnny Hallidays group. In this way, the Krakow artist began to prepare and acquaint herself with these extraordinary songs. Yaga Kowalik has shown her performance of Barbaras songs with great success in Poland and abroad. Walking the dog Theater is honored to present this fine artist and give audiences the opportunity to experience the work of Barbara. -------------------------- This event was submitted by Brown Paper Tickets! Exuberant freedom and hectic experimentation masked a sense of impending doom. After 1933, Hitler denounced them all as degenerate and their forced exile carried Weimar modernity to the rest of the world. Find out more at: www.vincemira.com ABOUT HUNTINGTON'S DISEASE (HD) HD is a devastating, hereditary, degenerative brain disorder for which there is, at present, no effective treatment or cure. HD slowly diminishes the affected individual's ability to walk, think, talk and reason. Eventually, the person with HD becomes totally dependent upon others for his or her care. Huntington's Disease profoundly affects the lives of entire families -- emotionally, socially and economically. HDSA currently supports more than 40 scientists and 16 major HD laboratories in North America and around the world through our HDSA Coalition for the Cure with annual grants which range from $40,000 to $100,000 for HD investigations. Twenty-one HDSA Centers of Excellence at locations in major hospitals and university medical centers are supported by HDSA across the continental United States. The national office also produces and distributes, free of charge, publications and informational materials on HD and maintains a toll-free information hotline to assist physicians, patients and family members. Through 12 HDSA regions, 38 volunteer-based chapters and affiliates, 200+ support groups, we reach out across the nation to offer HD patients and their families guidance, encouragement, resource information and leadership opportunities at HDSA events, meetings and seminars -- truly a place to care, share while we all work toward a cure. We also work towards change through our HDSA advocacy programs. -------------------------- This event was submitted by Brown Paper Tickets! In the mid 1980s he signed to the Elektra-Nonesuch label. Since then, Zorn has been quite prolific, usually putting out several new records each year. In 2006, Zorn was named a MacArthur Fellow. Every once in a while, you can catch him live at Tonic club in NYC where he hosts jazz jams and marathon regularly. His breakthrough recording was perhaps 1985's The Big Gundown: John Zorn Plays the Music of Ennio Morricone, wherein Zorn offered a number of often radical arrangements of Morricone's famed songs from various movies. The Big Gundown was endorsed by Morricone, and incorporated elements of traditional Japanese music, soul jazz, and other diverse musical genres. Zorn owns the Tzadik record label and has worked with a large number of experimental musicians, particularly in improvised music. He is inspired by other artists and different musical styles. He has a special attraction to underground artists and musical styles that are extremely loud, wild, or creative. He is perhaps best known for his work with Masada, with Joey Baron (drums), Dave Douglas (trumpet), Greg Cohen (bass); Masada is an Ornette Coleman-influenced band playing compositions based on Jewish scales. The Masada songs are part of the songbook with several different arrangements. These include the Masada String Trio, Bar Kohkba, and Electric Masada. He has also played with Painkiller (a mix of grindcore and free jazz in which he is joined by Mick Harris of Napalm Death) and Naked City (an often aggressive mix of jazz, rock and thrash metal). He has also worked with musicians such as Bill Frisell, Gary Lucas, Wayne Horvitz, Derek Bailey, Cyro Baptista, Trevor Dunn, Mark Feldman, Fred Frith, Erik Friedlander, Keiji Haino, Bill Laswell, Arto Lindsay, Mike Patton, John Medeski, Ikue Mori, Robert Quine, Marc Ribot, Jamie Saft, Kenny Wolleson, and the Violent Femmes. He has written music for television and film, which has been collected in the ongoing Filmworks series of records on his label, Tzadik. Some of these are jazz-based, others are classical. Zorn has also written several game pieces, in which performers are allowed to improvise while following certain structural rules. These works are in the main named after sports, and include Pool, Archery, and Lacrosse, as well as Cobra. He is also often noted for his postmodern, sometimes extreme, use of formal blocks, units which he combines and contrasts in various ways. Zorn discusses his history and the musical philosophy behind his early works in the book Talking Music by William Duckworth. Most recently, he has become the principal force behind the opening of The Stone, an avant-garde performance space in New York's Alphabet City which supports itself solely on donations, giving all door revenues directly to the performers. Zorn holds the title of artistic director. Zorn has lived and worked extensively in Japan and performs and records under the name Dekoboko Hajime, collaborating with and producing for numerous artists including Merzbow, Otomo Yoshihide, Melt Banana and of frequent collaborator Yamatsuka Eye. Many of these artists have now released albums on Tzadik and some regularly travel to New York where Zorn is based. -------------------------- This event was submitted by Brown Paper Tickets! Ha! Thats what you think, pal. From the day nigh two decades ago when the first scratchy sounds of Pavement floated in the ether above Stockton (crown jewel of Californias Central Valley, the sprawling breadbasket that neither the North or the South have claimed in Californias ongoing two states culture war; just providing some historical context that will be useful a few sentences later), the music of Stephen Malkmus has been the gift that keeps on keepin on. Did SM not offer the eternal promise of perfect sound forever? Was this sly appropriation of a digital age boast for Pavements low-bandwidth treble-kicks not a prescient example of that irony thing everybody talked about in the 90s? Can we then conclude that that by invoking paralyzed dreams forever on this album Malkmus foretells some sort of bad moon on the rise? Hell, I dont know, and Im the omniscient narrator of this artist bio. But I will point out that much of Real Emotional Trash, his fourth "solo" LP (this one credited with The Jicks, like his second, Pig Lib), is decidedly low-down and heavy. It could hardly be otherwise with monster drummer Janet Weiss now a full-fledged Jick, alongside bassist Joanna Bolme and guitar/keyboardist Mike Clark. Meanwhile, Malkmus the guitar hero is on full display here. Dragonfly Pie, Baltimore, and the title track are alchemic combinations of intricate composition and unfettered jam. Whoa, did I actually type the phrase unfettered jam? Scratch that. (Did I actually say scratch that? Its a good thing I'm anonymous as well as omniscient.) Malkmus genius is that he knows exactly when to fetter. These songs may sprawl like the Central Valley (told you), they may spread out like a jets flame, but when they reach that last tract house they gracefully spread their wings and head for the unclaimed land beyond. Indeed, although Malkmus makes the Pacific Northwest his home, this feels like a California album. Check out how Real Emotional Trash begins as a modern-day Tonights the Night, before evolving into a road trip from the Mexican border to Marin, in the tradition of Pavements Unfair. And dig those Allman Bros. leads (really!). Elsewhere, We Cant Help You channels the Bands The Weight, tapping that same vein of late-night melancholia and early-morning lucidity. Cold Son sounds like a cruise down the Ventura Highway. And if another song released this year makes you smile as much as Gardenia, I have a rare Crust Brothers bootleg with your name on it. While I cannot get with the songs insistence that its singer is not a present, I can sympathize with one line: dont want to damn you with the faintest praise. Thats what it feels like to write about this record, tossing around those historical comparisons, making you read about it when you could be listening to it. So listen, already. -------------------------- This event was submitted by Brown Paper Tickets! "The Hard Lessons blast a Motown-influenced soul sound anchored by a must-see drummer simply known as 'The Anvil'" (Indianapolis INtake). Detroit's The Hard Lessons make rock music. Not the kind of rock music that plays during beer commercials or in the background at party scenes in bad movies, but the kind of rock that inspires people to stand up, stomp the floor, and allow themselves to be transported somewhere else. In a nod to both the serial comic strips of the 40's (think Superman), as well as the record clubs of the 90's (think Sub Pop), Detroit's The Hard Lessons have released the first single in a four part series, B sides and G sides. Release dates began in November 2007 on both CD and 45 with special interrelating artwork. Each single chronicles modern life from both a male and female perspective, as seen through the eyes of the band's male and female vocalists (and songwriters) Augie and Ko Ko. Arts & Entertainment.Music 19759 Madison WI United States 53703 608.268.1122 http://www.trueendeavors.com About Electric Six MySpace Layouts Show business is often referred to as the last frontier of Communism. Think about it. Performers are beholden to the common interests of a faceless collective who demand more for less. In the advent of technology, the ability of the artist to make massive profits has been destroyed. Artists, performers, midgets, musicians, jugglers, magicians, deejays everybody all of us were all fucked now. The result? Im not going to bring out your hamburger and fries in a timely manner. Im going to take cigarette breaks every 5 minutes. Youve made me wait in a bread line, and Im going to rest my aching dogs while your white ass salivates over that burger just sitting there, taunting you under the heat lamp. And Im not going to bring it over to you until Im good and ready. That was the Soviet Union then and this is Hollywood now. But even in the belly of despair, there is always hope. We know of a small town, north of Star City, in the woody fields of evil Mother Russia. The town, Gorchakovagrad, officially never existed. But we know it was there and we know how they danced. They danced around a fire created not by accidental nuclear disaster, but a fire fueled by their own desire a desire to once again be entertained. And to sell the entertainment at a high price so that they and their families might once again live as higher beings with swimming pools shaped like Mickey Mouse. Gorchakovagrad made Ibiza look like Houston, made Vegas look like Newark. Men dressed as neon gods. Women dressed as lizards. Dancing was cutthroat, dangerous. Music was loud, sensual, sexual, brave, sexual and sexy. The deejays were Italian. Money changed hands. Fashion conquered all. The girls, though reptilian, were hot. They were sexy capitalist pigs that knew their way around a deck of turntables..and they liked to fuck. There were no iPods, no computers, no websites. No file sharing. No intentional neutering of Americas teens. There was only 100% pure entertainment created by humans.for humans. And love. This happened in the Soviet Union. And this will happen again on Oct. 21 when Electric Six releases its fifth record entitled Flashy. Opening with the shameless and cowardly, but highly entertaining and delicious Gay Bar, Pt. 2, Electric Six is coming at you with all full force, hearkening back immediately to a very profitable time in its career, hoping that somehow an association will be made wherein the listener might accidentally buy more copies of this record than he normally would have because he thinks hes getting Gay Bar, Pt. 1. From there the album moves into a back to back to back-to-back selection of radio-ready pop nuggets, insisting that you hold us tight and never let us go. There are no themes on Flashy. Only hooks and aural delights. But we try to dress it up in glitter and neon along the way and thats why we talked about the Soviet Union a little bit. The new album is heavy at times as demonstrated by Formula 409 and Heavy Woman. The album is anthemic at times as demonstrated by Your Heat is Rising and We Were Witchy Witchy White Women. The album is smooth and sleek at times as demonstrated by Face Cuts and Watching Evil Empires Fall Apart. And the album is, above all, forward-thinking.as demonstrated by the triumphant Making Progress. Most importantly, Flashy, the new album by Detroits Electric Six, is a beacon of liberty in an ocean of communism. If you love America, you will buy this record. You are either with us or you are with David Geffen. Flashy by Electric Six will be released on Metropolis Records on Oct. 21 in North America. See the band on the Hittin The Walls and Workin The Middle tour is it chugs through the United States, Spain, the UK and Ireland this fall. About Local H: Alternative rock mainstays Local H return with their seventh album on May 13, titled 12 Angry Months. The bands debut on Shout! Factory, 12 Angry Months is Local Hs first new studio album since 2004s Whatever Happened To P.J. Soles? Written after the bitter end of a long-term relationship, the album chronicles a full year of post-breakup experiences. Each track on 12 Angry Months corresponds to a month, and deals with the range of emotions one encounters after love turns sour. Those emotions range from anger (so, baby could you do me a favor? fall off the earth and i'll see you later), to jealousy (this is crazy, I cant believe that you replaced me), to acceptance (you knew wed never make it anyway). Highly regarded for their powerful sound and unique two-man lineup with Scott Lucas on vocals and guitar and Brian St. Clair on drums, Local H is known for derisive lyrics, heavy guitars and feedback, energetic live shows, and an active relationship with their fans. The band performs regularly, and will be on tour nationally in 2008. In 2007 Local H showcased their typical humor when they played a show at Chicagos Cellular Field, and fans were only granted by finding Lucas around town and proclaiming Attention all planets of the Solar Federation - we have assumed control. Other shows have seen the band passing out a sushi menu-type ballot to take song requests, auctioning off a concert on eBay, and performing under the names and guises of other bands, including Nirvana, Tom Petty, Led Zeppelin, and Hall & Oates. Originally formed in Zion, Illinois, Local H released their first album, Ham Fisted, on Island Records in 1995. On that album and the gold-selling follow-up As Good As Dead, the band came to be known for sardonic songs such as Eddie Vedder, High-Fiving MF and had their biggest hit with the alternative radio staple, Bound For The Floor. -------------------------- This event was submitted by Brown Paper Tickets! Arts & Entertainment.Music 17910 Newman CA United States 95360 (209)862-4490 http://www.westsidetheatre.org Roy Rogers is one of the premier slide guitarists performing today. With eight solo recordings, he has also been nominated for two Grammy Awards and 6 Grammy credits as the producer of John Lee Hooker and Ramblin' Jack Elliott releases. He is well known for his exciting live performances, having toured in the 1980's with John Lee Hooker's Coast to Coast Blues Band and then with his own group The Delta Rhythm Kings since 1986. Rogers has appeared at numerous festivals and special events throughout the world, including Montreux Jazz (Switzerland), North Sea Jazz Festival (Holland), Notodden (Norway), Byron Bay (Australia), New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival (USA) and Montreal Jazz (Canada) in addition to touring Europe, the U.S.A. and Canada. Rogers' ability to electrify and move audiences to their feet is well known. He loves to perform and it shows. Nominated for Best Blues Guitarist by the W.C. Handy's in 2003, his virtuosity and style of slide guitar has been recognized worldwide and acknowledged in such publications as Rolling Stone, USA Today, Billboard, Guitar Player, Acoustic Guitar and Guitar & Bass magazine. Norton Buffalo is considered one of the most versatile and seasoned harmonica virtuosos in the world. For good reason. Buffalo has contributed to over 120 major albums by artists as diverse as Bonnie Raitt (that blazing solo on Runaway), Marshall Tucker, Johnny Cash, Kenny Loggins, Elvin Bishop, as well as the Grammy award winning Minute By Minute by the Doobie Brothers. Norton continues to tour annually as a long time member of The Steve Miller Band, with whom he has been featured on the harmonica and vocals since 1975, on stage and on record throughout Steve's long and successful career. Buffalo has as well, been a featured performer touring with Kenny Loggins and in 2000 as a featured singer, musician on tour with Olivia Newton John (Including a vocal duet on one of her songs from Grease), and in performances with long time friends The Doobie Brothers, Little Feat and some magical moments onstage with Jackson Browns in several Bay Area concerts on his recent acoustic tours. -------------------------- This event was submitted by Brown Paper Tickets!
