Long before they land on a stage, you see them unfolding before you, you hear them in your head. Sound and image are invaluable tools, as instrumental to the playwright as dialogue and character, responsible not just for the visceral texture of the layered, 3-dimensional world of your play but catalysts also for change, for movement, for meaning and emotional resonance. In this workshop we will explore the realm of the stage directionsound and image as event and actionboth as literal blueprint for the staging of your play and as amazingly impossible jumping off point for your collaborators. We will parse the theatrical gestalt and narrative thrust of sound, approaching plays as musicfull of shifts and interruptions and the ghosts of the return. And we will explore the music inherent in the juxtaposition of images. We will also investigate the dramatic potential of song, as well as the presence of audio/visual technology on stage, embedded within your text, as a tool for propelling narrative, distance, and intimacy. -------------------------- This event was submitted by Brown Paper Tickets! In the right hands though, that plot has the power to shake modern audiences to their core. You couldn't ask for better hands than Christopher Marlowe's, and "Doctor Faustus" is his masterpiece. Faustus is a scholar who has pursued all the fields of knowledge to their ends and casts about for ultimate knowledge. His deal with Lucifer highlights clashes between the medieval age and the coming renaissance as well as the battle (ongoing) between Christian and secular worlds. Interestingly, two versions of the play exist, one published in 1604 and the other in 1616 (both years after Marlowe's death), but you'll have to come see our production to discover which version we're using... Either way, it's Mephistophilis, the 7 Deadly Sins and the Supernatural. Great theatre! Opens Friday, October 24th. Performances Fridays and Saturdays October 24th through November 22nd at 8 pm, plus an extra showing Thursday, November 20th at 8 pm. -------------------------- This event was submitted by Brown Paper Tickets! Fiamma Fumana began as a studio project in 1999a tribute to the female vocal tradition of Northern Italy (like the choirs of mondine, the rice gatherers who were all young girls) revitalized by a new generation and electronic dance music culture. The result is an intriguing blend of old Italian dance tunes played to new Italian dance grooves, traditional ballads and state-of-the art electronica. To these young urbanite Europeans, electronic beats make a natural bedrock for re-interpreting the songs of previous generations. Female vocals connect past to future with unforgettable pathos. One other key ingredient, a rare regional bagpipe called the piva Emiliana, adds an unexpected Celtic-sounding flavor to the mix. The result is clearly Italian yet broadly international in its appeal. -------------------------- This event was submitted by Brown Paper Tickets! The Adventures Of Tom Sawyer is the irresistible story of a fourteen-year-old boy growing up in the heartland of America. This Broadway musical version of Mark Twain's immortal novel is set in 1840 in St. Petersburg, Missouri, a bustling town on the banks of the Mississippi River. In the course of the story, Tom matches wits with his stern Aunt Polly, falls in love with the beautiful, feisty Becky Thatcher, and goes on the adventure of his life with Becky and that irresistible renegade, Huckleberry Finn. Along the way we meet a terrifying villain named Injun Joe, Tom's bratty half-brother Sid, and all the other boys and girls in the village - providing one scene-stealing children's role after the other. As this fun-filled musical unfolds, we share with Tom and his friends all of the rollicking and heart-stopping adventures that we find in Twain's masterpiece, whether it's Tom tricking his friends into white-washing the fence, crossing swords with schoolmaster Lemuel Dobbins, getting lost in McDougal's Cave, or taking on the Reverend Sprague in church. Filled with foot-stomping, toe-tapping songs, The Adventures Of Tom Sawyer is a tale of thrilling escapes, comedy and inspiration for the whole family. -------------------------- This event was submitted by Brown Paper Tickets! Support your local organizations and enjoy a night of exceptional theater. Arts & Entertainment.Theatre 20467 Vancouver WA United States 98685 Presented by the Salmon Creek Watershed Council, Peter Donaldson's SALMONPEOPLE is sly, funny and sophisticated theater at its best - Garrison Keillor meets Johnny Appleseed in Robin Williams kitchen. SALMONPEOPLE is one man's hilarious and poignant journey to figure out how the real world works. Is it about salmon? Is it about people? Or something bigger than both? SALMONPEOPLE is an utterly original work of theater, a one-man show with everybody in it, a tour de force of lyric cartography, ribald characters, scientific soliloquy, and sweeping history accompanied by the haunting melodies of electronic cellist Jami Sieber and sound environments by Lance Limbocker. With good humor, good science and audacious storytelling, Peter Donaldson's SALMONPEOPLE covers one huge landscape and everybody's bottom line. Bring your teacher, bring your preacher, your teenager, grandpa and grandma. Peter Donaldson is our very own Bioregional Bard. Since 2005, the Salmonpeople Tour has reached 4,435 audience members through 31 performances in 19 towns. Standing ovations every time. WHAT AUDIENCES ARE SAYING ABOUT SALMONPEOPLE! "I was positively stunned by Peter's performance of Salmonpeople." - Dave Williams, CEO, ShoreBank Pacific "Performance after performance Peter walked onstage, sucked everyone in, and didn't let them go until after the standing ovation." - Scot Whitney, Artistic Director, Harlequin Productions "This masterfully-woven, thoroughly engaging play refuses to indulge in the blame game that too often divides and polarizes our communities. No small feat." - Mark Trenholm, Executive Director,Tillamook Estuaries Partnership "Peter's beguiling approach helps people make connections He makes those connections with humor, insight, and good storytelling. Only when he is done, and people head out to their every-day lives do they realize that he has reached them viscerally and fundamentally. Thats good theater." - Billy Frank, Jr., Chairman, Northwest Indian Fisheries Commission "I was riveted, wanting to see where the story was heading. The story unfolds in layers like an onion skin, each layer revealing deeper and deeper meaning. Never preachy, an utterly original and intelligently crafted work of art. It was a very moving experience." - Joanne Day, Fisheries & Oceans Canada "Brilliant performance! Peter connects with an audience in a most profound and unique way - one that fills each with the feeling that he is talking directly and perhaps, only, to him or her." - Toni Sar'h Petrinovich, Whidbey Island "Marvelous. I was totally drawn in, intrigued, and curious, and touched, and inspired, and entertained, and delighted and very grateful." - Jean Eisele, Professor of Education, University of Washington -------------------------- This event was submitted by Brown Paper Tickets! Arts & Entertainment.Theatre 20458 Reading PA United States 610-375-9106 http://www.rcptheatre.org/odd-couple.html Neil Simon's famous update of his contemporary classic starts with a group of women friends playing their regular game of Trivial Pursuit. This week, the coterie is meeting at the apartment of Olive Madison, a divorcee who freely admits to being a slob: "I leave a mess when I read a book." Late to arrive is Florence Unger, a stickler for detail who would try the patience of a saint, and who has unfortunately just become separated from her husband. As life would have it, the slob and the fuss-budget decide to room together -- with hilarious results! Within days, Florence's obsessive habits start taking their toll on Olive and their friends. The only remedy Olive can think of (a pair of brothers from Barcelona) disastrously backfires, and the two women are forced to agree on one thing -- even the best of friends sometimes make the worst of roommates. -------------------------- This event was submitted by Brown Paper Tickets! Arts & Entertainment.Theatre 20455 Reading PA United States 610-375-9106 http://www.rcptheatre.org/our-lady-tortilla.html The Cruz family is volatile even in the best of times. On this particular day, Nelson, the youngest son, enters the house in a panic to hide the more obvious religious relics from the sight of his "gringo" girlfriend, who is visiting for the weekend. Nelson's mother, Dahlia, is obsessed with retrieving her husband from his new girlfriend; and Eddie, her elder son, shows up in a van with his failed life and pregnant girlfriend. But the "real" pandemonium is caused by sweet, long-suffering Dolores, Dahlia's old-maid sister, when she sees the face of the Holy Virgin in a tortilla. This miracle brings hordes of believers and reporters to camp out on the Cruz's lawn to await further miracles. As the family struggles with beliefs and conflicts, old and new, the endurance of family love is revealed to be the real miracle. -------------------------- This event was submitted by Brown Paper Tickets! The Georgia band does indeed mix its Neil Young with its Lynyrd Skynyrd, but underneath all those heavy chords is a group of guys raised on Nirvana, Sonic Youth, and other titans of early-'90s alt-rock. When over the years he gets progressively too radical and outspoken for the establishment's liking, he is branded a traitor to his country, harassed, and denied opportunities to perform or travel. Just as physical, emotional and mental stress threaten to push him over the fine line between genius and madness, he is summoned to appear before the House Un-American Activities Committee. A mysterious African spirit woman appears to help him through the most difficult and important performance of his career. The play is a roller coaster journey through Robesons remarkable and eventful life, and highlights how his radical activism caused him to be disowned and disremembered, even by the leaders and descendants of the civil rights movement. It features some of his famous songs and speeches, including a dramatic rendition of Ol Man River.
